Social Enterprise seminar in Slough
Social Enterprise Coalition and CEMVO seminar at Baylis House in Slough on 9th March 2011
As Chair of CEMVO, I welcomed the key note speaker Ms. Fiona Mactaggart MP for Slough after explaining how wonderful he finds, as an accountant, that Charities are now able to move into social enterprises and which is bound to make communities stronger and self sufficient over time.
Fiona Mactaggart said that there are three things needed for a successful social enterprise:
– Mission, a Vision, a Dream, and this is the most important factor
– Money, to start anything you do need some money
– Skills, and this is as important as Money.
Fiona was proud to have several social enterprises developing in Slough and she hoped the new Big Society bank will provide the seed capital to the new fledgling social enterprises, which by building community relationships provide essential and basic services to the local community and by youth engagement through projects like running football clubs channel energies in the right direction.
Claudine Reid of Social Enterprise Coalition described her own case study where her company P J Community Services contracted with the local council to do shopping for the elderly in the area and now they have 9000 sq. ft warehouse with several delivery vans, and a recording studio, a nursery and so on, providing basic social care, but culturally specific.
Several social enterprise companies and social entrepreneurs spoke and participated in workshops to learn from each other.
